CityFactory operates on three levels: art, community, and environment. Each level shapes the larger story we tell. At the very heart of the initiative, however, are the communities of our workers and participants.

“In every city we enter, we seek to build multigenerational local communities that play an active and essential role in the factory and in the projects that grow from it. These participants come from all corners of the city and from a wide range of ages and backgrounds. They receive artistic and professional training designed to enrich individual skills, introduce new creative tools, and foster continuity—both within the city and among participants themselves.

With every project we develop, we consider both the existing communities of CityFactory and the future ones. We ask how they can ensure continuity in the city where they operate, and how they might pass on their knowledge to other cities we will reach. To create a strong and sustainable foundation for long-term artistic activity, we make sure that one community can give rise to the next, strengthening the field from within.

The Jerusalem workers’ community was formed in 2023 around CityFactory Jerusalem. It began with a group of senior women from different neighborhoods of the city. These women attended the training workshops, worked in the factory, built two additional Jerusalem-based projects, and are now undergoing further professional artistic training. This model has become a source of inspiration and an example for us, and we are working to realize it in other cities as well.”
